Despite the growing prominence of sectors like textile, tourism, and technology, green jobs and environmental conservation careers often take a backseat. Negative news about environmental degradation and perceived lack of political will further discourage young people from pursuing careers in this field.
A recent study, "Understanding Students' Environmental Awareness and Perception of Green Jobs - A Case Study for Cambodia" (October 2020), revealed that:
All students are aware of climate change and its consequences.
Students express concern about climate change's impact on nature, their future, health, and society.
Students are optimistic about Cambodia's green transition.
Most students recognize their individual responsibility in environmental protection.
Most students acknowledge the need for corporate behavior change.
Only half of the students considered pursuing a green job.
Some students hold negative perceptions of green jobs.
Students have diverse ideas about potential green careers, often outside their current fields of study.
These factors collectively contribute to the perception of the environmental sector as a less desirable career path.
In Cambodia many organizations including Open Development Cambodia (ODC) has been dedicated to safeguarding forest cover, advocating for land rights, and upholding Indigenous Peoples' environmental rights.
However, we need more young people to actively engage in these efforts. While young Cambodians understand the significance of climate change, biodiversity conservation, and the importance of a healthy environment, their active participation in environmental protection remains limited. This is despite their awareness of the pressing environmental challenges.
